Interviewing Techniques - The Do’s and Don’ts

Progressive IT, consultants are trained to assist you in representing yourself to the best of your abilities.  They can provide you with information on the company and the interviewer, on what to expect and how to conduct yourself.

You never get a second chance on a first impression!

  • DO arrive on time or a few minutes early.  Being late is never excusable!
  • DO fill out an application, if asked to.  Fill it out in full.  Do not rely on your resume to do the selling for you. Be courteous and professional to all employees.
  • DO greet the interviewer with a smile and shake hands firmly, use their last name, be sure of the pronunciation.
  • DO wait until offered a seat before sitting.  Sit upright, be a good listener.
  • DO look the interviewer in the eye while speaking, it shows self-confidence and sincerity.
  • DO ask the interviewer to describe the position and duties early in the interview.
  • DO make sure you bring out your strong points, stress achievements.
  • DO show interest and enthusiasm.

Things you should not DO !

  • DON’T forget to take a copy of your resume to the interview.
  • DON’T lie, answer all questions truthfully.
  • DON’T answer with ‘yes’ or ‘no’, explain yourself whenever possible.
  • DON’T over answer the question.  Provide as much information as is necessary - no more, no less.
  • DON’T wear too much perfume or cologne.
  • DON’T make unnecessary derogatory remarks about previous or present employers.
  • DON’T inquire about salary, bonuses, vacations, etc. too early in the conversation.  Those questions have their place, usually after a description of the position is supplied and the interviewer has outlined their expectations and requirements.
